Cruising the Backwaters of Kerala

Cruising the Backwaters of Kerala

Backwaters of Kerala could be called a unique labyrinth of waterbodies interconnected between the mainland and Arabian sea. It is an unimaginable puzzle of waterways sometimes feel breathtakingly huge and shoreless as Vembanad lake – the biggest of all – and sometimes as narrow as a canoe in the remotest corners of Alappuzha, a place dubbed as the Venice of the east for its interwoven canals that transports life as much as the perishable trade worthy things.

Alappuzha or Alleppey – as it is known in other parts of the world – is a maze in which the backwaters are linked to the rest of Kerala. It is a scattered piece of land, or at least, that’s how one feels as it’s surrounded by water, almost every corner of the lagoon like landscape.

Since time immemorial people living by the backwaters used to sport their boats or canoes for their daily chorus and leisure activities. There were smaller canoes for a selfish single dreamer to huge ‘kettuvalloms’ that were used to transport goods.

Kettuvalloms that were once used to transport rice and spices were later converted to magnificent and luxurious houseboats with all ensuite facilities. Houseboats are the stamp of Kerala backwaters, a floating abode of luxury and meticulous Kerala artisanship.

To enjoy the backwaters in its wholeness one must choose the path of seeking. You can hop on a houseboat to enjoy an overnight cruise to see the sounds and sights up-close. Or if you are a seeker and a sage, take a country boat or ride on a canoe through the narrow canals to see how life unfolds. Or you can hit the adrenaline, kayak through the labyrinth of narrow canals and splendid lakes accompanied by our expert guides.

The quaint backwaters will unravel itself as you move. The turquoise blue waters will chime in the fleeting waves as you daub your wandering mind in the sights to come. As you crisscross the paths of Kuttanad, the lives of ordinary folk will touch you with a reminiscence of every fleeting memory you stumbled on your path. This is one moment you will just forget yourself when listening to the holler of a woman sitting by the shore cleaning the vessels, kids running half naked in their gayness, soulful prayers emanating from the tall, white and invisible church.

Beyond the mundane is serpent like snake-boats, slow moving cranes in the water. As the gentle breeze tantalized by the omnipresent coconut trees swish past you, behold for wonders.

A sip of Kerala’s own toddy compliments well with the gently seasoned Karimeen fish fry. Or you can go gaga over tapioca boiled with coconut paste served along the hot and spicy fish curry. As you savour the intricate meaning of getting cozied by God’s own country, wait for your recliner to catch the best sunset.
